Watergrabbing

Water is our most precious resource. But it is also the main prey of the great economic interests that every day, everywhere, grab it from communities and entire nations, generating pollution, poverty and new wars.

Everywhere, in poor and rich countries alike, water is turning from a freely accessible common good to a private good controlled by those in power.

Under the pressure of increasing demand for water from population growth and industrial expansion in developing countries, in the grip of climate change that is increasingly visible in our daily lives, water is becoming a source of conflict.

A limitate commodity that must be “grabbed” at the expense of its neighbor, even to the detriment of women and girls who deal with water collection on a daily basis, taking time away from their education and work.

We will talk about watergrabbing through exemplary stories that correspond to different declinations of the phenomenon, touching on its main themes: dike building, energy, water wars, pollution, landgrabbing, food, waste.
