Holidays by the Sea

A weird history of the Italian seaside holidays. The directing debut of the famous Italian writer and Fellini’s last screenplayer.
Why do people go to the seaside? Why do hordes of people gather every summer on Italian beaches to submit to the torment of exposing themselves to the sun’s punishment? For his debut as a director, Ermanno Cavazzoni – author of the script for Federico Fellini’s “La voce della luna” / “The Voice of the Moon” – has chosen to explore how Italians’ attitudes towards their summer holidays evolved during the 20th century. A choice strongly influenced by the experience of viewing the contents of the Home Movies – Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia in Bologna, a precious library of over three thousand hours of amateur film material shot between the 1920s and the 1980s.
